VOCATIONAL WIND ENERGY TRAINING IN THE UK

A North East partnership is gearing up to bridge the vocational skills gap to service the rapidly expanding wind industry.

In August 2006, Northumberland College received accreditation for an NVQ Level 2 in Sustainable Energy (WindSkills). This course is a vocational course that will build skills and knowledge associated with harnessing wind power. A follow-up NVQ Level 3 course is currently being accredited that will focus more on the mechanical and electrical engineering skills required to secure employment within the wind energy industry.

The pioneering training course will enable students to develop wind turbine connection, installation and maintenance skills that will help them enter into the sector. The programme will incorporate a combination of classroom training and on site experience. The course has been developed through the Northumberland Renewable Energy Group(1) and is being delivered by Northumberland College at Kirkley Hall Campus.

With manufacturers and developers both encountering problems with the recruitment of technical staff, the course will give participants exposure to market opportunity and contacts that could lead to business diversification opportunities.  The sector is growing rapidly with many wind projects due to be constructed within the North East and ranging from single turbines to large windfarms.  Developers and manufactures are keen to involve local companies with projects and real opportunities exist for local companies to become involved.
