Spotlight on Fuel Poverty - how tackling fuel poverty can provide safe, healthy, sustainable communities and help eradicate poverty in the UK
This seminar will be of interest to managers, officers and elected members from local authorities and representatives from regional and local agencies with an interest in addressing fuel poverty in order to create safe, healthy, sustainable communities and help eradicate poverty.
Location :North East Theme :Fuel poverty & warm zones Start Date :10/12/08 Time : From 9:30 : To 13:00 Organiser : National Energy Action Venue : Jury's Inn, Newcastle- upon-Tyne
The seminar is being organized against a backdrop of increasing energy prices which mean that almost 4 million households in England are in fuel poverty, representing 1 in 5 of all households in the country – an increase of 26% since 2007. In the North East alone there are 315,000 fuel poor households, these households are faced with an average dual fuel energy bill of around £1,300 - around 125% higher than in 2003.
The seminar will highlight Governments continued action to tackle the problem and what more can be done at a national level. It will highlight how proposed changes to local and regional governance will impact upon strategies to tackle fuel poverty in the region and focus on the recommendations that may be announced following the recent BERR and DCLG consultation Prosperous Places: Taking Forward the Review of Sub-National Economic Development and Regeneration.
The seminar will also provide case study examples of good practice in tackling fuel poverty in the region, particularly in ‘hard to treat’ and rural properties, and provide the opportunity for group discussion on local, regional and national issues which will then be taken forward by NEA and others.
