Durham offer a range of Engineering Courses aimed at developing highly skilled engineers fully prepared for the requirements of the European engineering profession in the 21st century. The courses are run in a modern well-equipped building in the heart of the Ancient University's Science Site, with extensive IT facilities and close to both the University's Computer Centre and the Main Library. The School of Engineering has received excellent ratings in the most recent assessments of both Teaching Quality and Research.

MSc in New & Renewable Energy

The New and Renewable Energy Group (NAREG) at Durham University offers this new MSc course to teach about this subject wwhich is increasingly gaining national and gloab importance. The course invovles teaching by academics whose work is internationally recognised, excellent facilities and departmental seminar series and talks by visiting speakers. Course content includes, harnessing renewable sources, the environmental impact of energy provision, co-generation systems, network integration issues and electrical generation plant.

NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY

MSc in Clean Technology

This one year, full time course provides training in environmental management and sustainable development in an industrial context. It covers the environmental issues surrounding industrial processes, including the legislative framework and explains how to minimise pollution and resource usage whilst operating a productive company. The reduction of waste at source is preferable and often cheaper than end of pipe solutions and may be achieved by various means such as process modification, recycling or recovery of waste materials. In these times of increased legislation, with stricter environmental controls and greater public access to company records , there is a very real need to look again at process design and company policies…

REFLEX Renewable Energy Flexible Training Programme

REFLEX is a new, innovative postgraduate programme in renewable energy offered by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. The programme offers MSc, Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate qualifications. In addition, all modules in the programme are available as stand alone Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules. REFLEX provides a fully integrated training programme covering mechanical, electrical, chemical, marine, environmental engineering, and energy management associated with renewable energy systems…

UNIVERSITY OF NORTHUMBRIA

MSc in Building Services Engineering

This programme has been specifically designed to allow graduates in Building Services Engineering to advance their knowledge in terms of engineering, research applications and management. For recent graduates the programme provides a route to Chartered Engineer status and corporate membership of The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineering (CIBSE). For experienced practitioners the programme may be followed to enhance career opportunities within industry, or as a preparation for further academic research…

BEng (Hons) Architectural Environmental Design

A major contribution to global warming is the production of CO2 from energy consumed by our existing building stock. New building regulations aim to address this problem through effective building and environmental systems design. This design process needs professional engineers who are capable of producing effective and responsible designs. This programme considers the environmental impact of building design, through performance analysis of thermal, ventilation and daylighting elements of the building envelope together with the internal heating, ventilating, air conditioning, lighting and electrical systems to ensure that optimum design is achieved for the whole building…

SUNDERLAND UNIVERSITY

MSc Environmental Management

This multi-disciplinary programme explores the complexity of interactions between environmental management system implementation and resource use in the private and public sectors with the emphasis on decision making for a sustainable future. You will be equipped to interpret data via systems such as GIS, prepare management plans and offer environmental advice. The programme is fully accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES). The programme incorporates work-based training/development…

THE OPEN UNIVERSITY

Energy for a Sustainable Future (T206)
This is a Level 2 course that has been devised to suit students from a wide range of backgrounds. The course covers issues relating to the sustainability problems of conventional fossil and nuclear fuel use, and how they might be ameliorated.  Students explore the technological and social possibilities for using energy much more efficiently; and investigate various renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind and biofuels, that significantly reduce effects on the environment.

VOCATIONAL

Energy Awareness Course - National Energy Action (NEA)/ NVQ
Three-day course designed for people who wish to gain or further their knowledge of domestic energy efficiency and is in particular aimed at those who are in a position to provide face-to-face energy advice. It can lead to the City and Guilds 6176 qualification for those participants who choose to sit the final three-part examination. A number of courses are run throughout the UK.

NORTHUMBERLAND COLLEGE

Northumberland College – Wind Installer Training

The Wind Skills project is developing an NVQ for people interested in the installation, electrical connection, commissioning and operation and maintenance of wind turbines. Northumberland College together with NaREC and TNEI are developing the NVQ and are looking for local small businesses to participate in a pilot towards the end of 2005.

Northumberland College are also developing training courses relating to the installation of Biomass systems.

North Energy have been working with the LSC and Northumberland College to develop a Boiler Installers Training course.

Northwoods – Ignite Programme for Biomass Training
Ignite is the UK's first formal wood fuel training course and has been running in North East England since January 2004. Those attending the course have gained an excellent grounding in the economics of wood fuel supply, the technology that's available to produce wood fuel and the systems that burn it. Ignite is soon to be accredited by Lantra Awards as a VRQ in Renewable Energy (wood fuel), and will sit alongside chainsaw and similar qualifications in the forestry qualifications framework.

Northwoods – Energy Crops & Logistics Training
A Level 2 and 3 training course is being developed and piloted by Northwoods to address issues relating to energy crops and logistics. The training will comprise of a series of co-ordinated practical and classroom based seminars and workshops following either the energy crop establishment and management stream (to Level 3) or the hauling and handling stream (to Level 2).

PV Domestic Installer City & Guilds NVQ
Several UK colleges and training organisations are now delivering the new nationally recognised grid-connected PV installation course, City & Guilds course 2372. Aimed at practising experienced electricians who either have or are working towards NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, students will ideally have knowledge of the IEE 16th Edition Wiring Regulations and of Test and Inspection (City & Guilds courses 2381 and 2391 available from most further education colleges). Completion of the PV course is now part of a new second route to installer accreditation under the Solar Grants Scheme. The course runs for 5 days full time (including assessments) and will cost the student of the order of £500 per person (tbc by each college). Some colleges may not run all 5 days of the course consecutively.

Solar Domestic Hot Water (SDHW) Installer Training
This BPEC course is for the installation of solar domestic hot water (SDHW) systems.  The course is aimed at qualified or experienced heating engineers / plumbers.
