Biofuels in the North East
Activity in the North East is led by North East Biofuels. This is a cluster group of companies and organisations committed to the development of a sustainable transport biofuels business in the North East of England. Typically this involves the production of biodiesel blends and bioethanol petrol additive from non-food crops, and development of related supply chains. Much of this activity is based on Teesside. Already Petroplus on Teeside produce a 5% biodiesel blend which sells on forecourts under the name 'Bio-Plus'. D1 Oils, who recently announced their plans to run a high performance biodiesel powered car - the D1 Lola B2K - in the Le Mans global series of sports car races, also produce on Teesside. Alongside these, the Biofuels Corporation is currently building the UK's largest biodiesel production plant on Teesside. When completed, the £21m factory will produce 250,000 tonnes of biodiesel annually and will be the largest and most modern biodiesel plant in Europe.
In addition, North East Biofuels are working with support from One NorthEast on a project aimed at raising the presence of biodiesel in the region. This project, the 'One Green Route’, provides branding to rural forecourts to promote them as a provider of solely biodiesel fuels. So far, 5 garages have been refitted and rebranded but others will follow in a phased roll out across the region.
In addition to the roll-out of the One Green Route, North East Biofuels’ another major project is the development of a rapeseed oil crushing facility in the Tees Valley that can be used by biodiesel producers such as the Biofuels Corporation complex being built on Seal Sands. Once these two facilities are completed, the Tees Valley will be able to sell a product that is locally grown, crushed and produced.
Dermot Roddy, CEO of Renew Tees Valley, informs NEREG of biofuel activity on Teesside and supports this technology in the wider renewables agenda.
