Power generation and consumption
North East England is also home to more than half of the UK’s most intensive energy-using industries (in petrochemicals, aluminium, steel). The continued success of these industries in part reflects the phenomenal achievements of the £4m Energy Resource Excellence programme, co-funded by One NorthEast and the Carbon Trust, which is helping this industrial cluster to reduce energy consumption (and thus carbon emissions) while increasing productivity.
Notwithstanding high industrial energy demand, more than half of the energy produced in North East England is exported to other regions. This proportion continues to expand, and the region is now the UK’s largest producer of bio-energy, hosting the country’s largest biomass power plant, largest biodiesel plant, and largest bioethanol plant (under construction).
