Knowledge Transfer

The regional Knowledge Transfer Committee shares a strong consultancy culture, which has been developed collaboratively under the aegis of ‘Knowledge House’ (KH).  Established in 1995, KH is a joint effort of the five universities in North East England, along with the Open University in the North, providing brokerage between industrial needs and skills resident in the universities.  KH receives over 1,000 enquiries from client companies every year with a cumulative economic impact of more than £35m (a six-fold return on investment), and has been hailed by OECD  as a global model of best practice.

In addition, the region’s universities are developing new capacity and models of collaborative working including the appointment of Professors of Practice with strong business experience to develop new technology businesses.  Newcastle Science City is also creating a new science exploitation vehicle to ensure research output is matched to industrial need.
